BIRT provides a wide range of assessment and rehabilitation services to meet the needs of people with acquired brain injury (ABI). It does not matter if the injury was recent or a long time ago, or whether the person has had rehabilitation before.
The service provides post acute neuro rehab for people with a Sussex GP who have a new diagnosis of acquired brain injury of such complexity that they cannot be managed safely in the community. The conditions treated by the Consultant led specialist multidisciplinary team includes stroke, traumatic brain injury, GBS, critical illness, neuropathy incomplete, usually non traumatic spinal cord injury, brain tumours, MS relapse and complex amputees from Brighton and Hove area. It is a short stay unit.
The service does not accept people with functional neurological disorders, those with severe challenging behaviour and progressive neuro degenerative conditions.
